GAIL - Indian Speed Star- Prepare star athletes for pinnacle performances.

GAIL (India) Limited has started an athletics program “GAIL - Indian Speedstar” to find, nurture and groom young talent from the very grassroot levels across the country at the very early age and turn them into real performers. GAIL and the National Yuva Cooperative Society (NYCS) joined hands and launched this grassroot athletics program “Indian Speedstar” on 22nd March this year at New Delhi.

National Yuva Cooperative Society tied up with Anglian Medal Hunt Company as the technical Partner for Speedstar project. The persisting attempt focused grassroots program aims to create a pool of athletes with knack for top notch performance who can be medal contenders for the country in athletics for the pinnacle event of sports – “ Olympics 2020/2024”. Heroes need to be prepared for the ultimate glory there and now is the time to start grooming them. Indian speedstar would identify, select and nurture the hidden talent across the country in athletics and track and field events, a category where India hasn’t had much success apart from a few names. The age group being targeted is 11 - 17 years in 100m, 200m and 800m track events.

A panel of stalwart legends like P.T. Usha, Rachita Mistry, Anuradha Biswal and Kavita Raut have been appointed in the selection committee to support selections and guide the coaching camps. To prepare the best, you need the best at the helm of the affairs. They would create the Speedstar program and also develop the training plan and module for the selected athletes at the National Level.

District trials were conducted under the watchful eyes of coaches and selectors, appointed by the selection committee. The selection was based on talent identification and selection criteria set by the committee. Earlier this year with initial trials were conducted at 55 districts across 10 states in which more than 25,000 children participated and out of which 850 children crossed the 1st hurdle to make it to the state level. Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon. Minister of State , Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dutee Chand, Anuradha Biswal and Purnima Hembram selected young athletes from Bhubaneswar, Odisha and 14 children qualified for the National level trials.

The first State level camp and trial was organized on 27-28th of February in Sawai Maan Singh Stadium, Jaipur where 60 boys and girls participated and out of which 4 qualified for the next level. The state trials were held in Odisha (14 Selection), Delhi (28 Selection), Kerala (28 Selection) & Jharkhand(4 Selection) followed by Maharashtra and Gujarat in the last week of April. The shortlisted children from the State trials will participate in the National camp and the selection is scheduled to be held in May 2016 at JLN Stadium, New Delhi. Shortlisted athletes from state trials will attend an intensive national level camp. At the conclusion of the coaching camp, final trials will be held. Winners will be selected based on the qualification criteria and their potential. The winners will be given extensive training throughout the year. The top 9 athletes will then be provided with a world class coaching for over a period of 5 years with an ultimate objective making them represent India at the Olympics in the years to come.

The Indian Speedstar programme is the athletics` version of nurturing Iqbal – the fictious cricketer from the bollywood movie… coz speedstars need to be groomed for the world stage and GAIL is doing just that.
